Arrest in 19-year old Dickinson cold case

Police officials in Dickinson this morning announced the arrest of 40-year old Dennis Earl Bradford in the 1990 abduction, rape and attempted murder of then 8-year old Jennifer Schuett.




Houston Chronicle - Dennis Earl Bradford, 40, is accused of attacking Jennifer Schuett, now 27, said Dickinson Police Capt. Steve Krone. Bradford, who is married with two children and three grown stepchildren, was picked up on the way to his welding job with his wife this morning.
Police had his DNA sample because he was convicted of kidnapping a woman in 1997 and served four years in prison. Officials said Bradford once lived in Dickinson and attended Dickinson High and has lived in North Little Rock for about seven years.
The case was given new life last year when Dickinson police Detective Tim Cromie was assigned to the case, and he teamed with FBI Special Agent Richard Rennison to have the DNA retested on clothing found about 3.5 blocks from the empty lot where Schuett was dumped.
Cromie and Rennison accompanied North Little Rock police to make the arrest at 6:50 a.m., FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap said.
After being dragged into an overgrown empty lot, Schuett lay bleeding on a fire ant mound, unable to call for help because of her cut throat, for nearly 12 hours before playing children stumbled upon her.
She was flown to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where she scrawled notes to investigators about what happened. Doctors told her she would never be able to speak again, but she defied their predictions and regained her voice within weeks.

Cops Have Possible Suspect in Yale Student's Death

At least two Connecticut news organizations are reporting police have a suspect in the brutal death of Yale graduate student Annie Le.

The New Haven Independent and the New Haven Register report a Yale lab employee is being looked at by law enforcement. The technician works in the same Yale building where Le's body was found stuffed in the wall, the Register reported, citing multiple police sources.

He reportedly had scratches on his chest and was being investigated prior to police finding Le's body Sunday, according to the Register. The unidentified lab tech failed an FBI polygraph exam and during questioning asked for an attorney to be present, the Register reported.

The Independent reported the suspect is not in police custody.Police, however, have refused to say if they have a suspect in her death. Le was last seen on surveillance video Tuesday entering the five-story laboratory building in Yale's medical complex, where she worked as a graduate pharmacology student.

President Barack Obama called hip-hop musician Kanye West a "jackass" on Monday in an off-the-record comment during an interview with CNBC, an ABC News anchor reported on Twitter.
Obama was apparently weighing in on an interruption that occurred the night before during the MTV Video Music Awards where West grabbed the microphone from teen country singer Taylor Swift during her award acceptance speech to announce his belief that Beyonce had a better music video.
"Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential," "Nightline" co-anchor Terry Moran wrote Monday evening to his more than 1 million followers.
The tweet forced the network to issue an apology after the Internet quickly became abuzz over the stunning remark published on the microblogging site.
An ABC spokesperson said, "In the process of reporting on remarks by President Obama that were made during a CNBC interview, ABC News employees prematurely tweeted a portion of those remarks that turned out to be from an off-the-record portion of the interview," Politico reported. "This was done before our editorial process had been completed. That was wrong. We apologize to the White House and CNBC and are taking steps to ensure that it will not happen again."

The White House had no immediate comment on the matter.

Patrick Swayze dies of cancer at 57

Patrick Swayze, whose good looks and sympathetic performances in films such as "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghost" made him a romantic idol to millions, died Monday. He was 57. Swayze died of pancreatic cancer, his publicist, Annett Wolf, told CNN.

Swayze's doctor, Dr. George Fisher, revealed in early March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from the disease. "Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," Wolf said in a statement Monday.

The autopsy on the body of pop star Michael Jackson has been completed, but the coroner has ordered further tests and the cause of death has not been determined, a spokesman said.

Craig Harvey from the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office also said the autopsy showed no sign of external trauma or indication of foul play.

The cause of death has been deferred, which means the medical examiner has ordered additional testing such as toxicology and other studies, Craig Harvey, operations chief for the coroner, told a throng of reporters.
He said that once those tests are completed in four to six weeks, "We anticipate being able to close the case and issuing a final cause of death."

Silvio Berlusconi has denied allegations he paid women for sex, as he continued to be dogged by allegations he has a fondness for young models and starlets.

"I have never paid a woman," Berlusconi told Chi magazine – which he owns – in an interview published today. "I never understood what the satisfaction is when you are missing the pleasure of conquest.

"Previously, he had simply dismissed as "garbage" and a smear campaign reports that an acquaintance had paid at least three women to attend parties at his residences.

The allegations centre on an Italian model, Patrizia D'Addario, who claimed last week she had been paid more than €1,000 to attend a party at his residence in Rome along with other women. D'Addario alleged she eventually spent the night with the prime minister.Berlusconi told the magazine that D'Addario was "very well paid" to make the allegations, which have prompted an investigation in the southern city of Bari into the local businessman accused of recruiting and paying the women.

In a statement to the Ansa news agency, D'Addario denied she had been paid to mount a scandal.

Berlusconi has been on the defensive since his wife, Veronica Lario, announced several weeks ago she was divorcing him, citing his selection of young starlets and showgirls for European parliament elections, and his presence at the birthday party of an 18-year-old model in Naples.

Berlusconi has insisted there was nothing scandalous in his relationship with Noemi Letizia, who he has said was the daughter of an old friend from political circles. He said he went to the party because he happened to be in Naples that day.In the interview, Berlusconi said he was "sad, but serene" over the end of his relationship with Lario. "It was a very painful wound. I don't know if time will be able to cure it." D'Addario's allegations were followed by similar claims by two other women and reports that she had given over to Bari prosecutors audio and video tapes proving her story.

Giampaolo Tarantini, the man being investigated for allegedly abetting prostitution, has said he merely reimbursed the women for their travel and expenses. He said Berlusconi didn't know the expenses were paid.

Berlusconi admitted he knew Tarantini. "He was introduced to me as a serious and respected entrepreneur. Now that he is at the centre of an investigation I think that he should be presumed innocent, like any other citizen involved in a judicial case," he said.

Despite the scandals and criticism, Berlusconi has kept his popularity intact.

The State newspaper down in South Carolina has published a series of emails between Gov. Mark Sanford and the woman in Argentina with whom he had an affair.

Gov. Mark Sanford Admits Extramarital Affair

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford says he's been having an affair with a woman from Argentina and will resign as head of the Republican Governors' Association.
The married father of four emotionally apologized to his wife, staff and others at a news conference after returning Wednesday from a trip to Argentina that followed a dayslong absence. He staff had said the Republican was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
Sanford says he met the woman about eight years ago and it became romantic about a year ago. He says his wife and family have known about it for the past five months.

Obama talks tougher on Iran violence

WASHINGTON, AP – President Barack Obama on Tuesday declared the United States and the entire world "appalled and outraged" by Iran's violent efforts to crush dissent and for the first time expressed significant doubt about the legitimacy of the national election at the root of the upheaval.
The president suggested that Iran would face consequences for brutally beating back protest, warning that the way the country responds in the days ahead will shape its relationship with other countries, including the United States. He would not specify what any punishment might be.

In Iran, the chaotic images of riot police beating and shooting protesters have seized the world's attention and heightened pressure on Obama by the day.
He has searched for the right balance — supporting peaceful protest, condemning violence but trying to avoid any perception of U.S. meddling. In a toughening of his rhetoric, Obama expressed outrage at the "threats, beatings and imprisonments of the last few days. "
"I strongly condemn these unjust actions," he said.
Obama said he could not speak to precisely what happened at polling places because there were no international observers in place. But he said concerns about the fairness of Iran's presidential voting should not be discounted, stating that there are "significant questions about the legitimacy of the election."
At least 17 people have been killed in protests since the election last week.

9 Fatalities Confirmed in D.C. Metro Crash

Two of 76 injured in critical condition, mayor says; cause remains unclear.

WASHINGTON-(LA TIMES) Nine fatalities have been confirmed in the worst accident in the history of Washington's Metro subway system, authorities said Tuesday morning.

The updated casualty count came after rescue workers toiled through the night and into daylight this morning near the D.C.-Maryland line, where a Metro train rear-ended a stopped train during Monday evening's rush hour.

The victims included seven women and two men, all adults, according to Candace Smith, a Metro spokeswoman. Smith said around 11:15 a.m. that recovery operations have concluded; five bodies were recovered Monday and four more on Tuesday, she said.

Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty said that two people remain in critical condition at local hospitals. A total of 76 people were treated at local hospitals. A third injured passenger has been upgraded from critical condition, the mayor said at a morning news conference not far from the crash site.

Debbie Hersman, a National Transportation Safety Board investigator, said the crash-worthiness of subway train cars has been a concern of the NTSB for some time.

Investigators plan to interview survivors, check train maintenance records and look at Metro's training operations as part of its investigation, according to Hersman.

Montereale claims that she attending parties at Berlusconi’s Villa Certosa and was giving cash amounting to about 8,500 euros, jewelry and other gifts.

These latest allegations are creating a fire storm of bad publicity for the Italian Prime Minister. He’s never made any secret of his love for women, however, recent allegations from his wife that he ‘frequents minors’ have not gone over well with the public. There are also concerns as to what political favors the 72-year-old Berlusconi exchanges for his party companions.

Some are claiming that these allegations will be Berlusconi’s downfall. He claims its the communist left that are trying to smear him in the public forum. His defenders have made statements that range from the fact that he had prostrate surgery and therefore is incapable of the sexual escapades he’s been accused of, to the fact he doesn’t have to pay for sex to simply that he needs to choose his friends better.

Carmel recalls canned cioppino sauce

Canned cioppino sauce produced and sold by Sea Harvest Restaurant of Carmel has been voluntarily recalled because of possible botulism contamination.
No illnesses have been reported.
Authorities say the restaurant is cooperating with the California Department of Public Health and the Monterey County Health Department in the voluntary recall.
The sauce was manufactured by Sea Harvest and sold at retail in the restaurant. The state says Sea Harvest does not have the required cannery license to produce the cioppino sauce.

During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood. So Obama waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked the insect dead in one try.
Obama told the crowd he is working to repair the financial institutions and auto companies. "But you probably wouldn't understand the concept of troubled industries," he said, "working as you do in radio and television."
But he said Friday's dinner was far better than his appearance at the White House Correspondents Dinner, a higher profile event that typically attracts Hollywood celebrities.
"Why hang out with celebrities when I can spend time with people who make me one?" Obama said.
The president also poked fun at himself and his acerbic chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, who was seen in photos on top of a camel during a trip to Egypt.
"I'm sure you've all seen the pictures of Rahm on that camel," Obama said. "I admit, I was a little nervous about the whole situation. I said at the time, 'This is a wild animal known to bite, kick and spit. And who knows what the camel could do?'"
On a more serious note, Obama concluded his remarks by saying he appreciated the work of broadcasters who bring truth to people and allow people to bring truth to the world. He noted how this was happening in scenes from the current disputed presidential election in Iran.
