Plane Captain Dies In Mid-Flight
A Continental Airlines flight from Brussels will be making an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport after the plane's captain died in mid-flight Thursday morning, CBS station WCBS-TV in New York reported.
Federal Aviation Administration officials said that Continental Flight 61 will land at Newark at noon. FAA spokesperson Arlene Salac said that there are two first officers on board the aircraft, both of whom are qualified to fly the Boeing 777. Salac said although an emergency has been declared, giving the flight priority handling upon arrival at Newark, there are no equipment issues so they expect a standard landing.
Newark was the flight's final destination. It departed Brussels at 9:45 a.m. It's not known what caused the pilot to become ill. Officials say a reserve crew on the flight will be managing the landing.
